"Education is the great equalizer, you must, in order to compete in a global society-- you must have an education to be competitive." Dr. Muriel Mickles VP of Academic and Student Affairs
The Alliance for Excellence Program at Central Virginia Community College seeks to enhance opportunities for African American students to compete in a global society.
Each year the Alliance celebrates the academic excellence of students with a 3.0 gpa or higher at the Annual Awards Banquet. This event typically features more than 300 students that include local high school seniors and CVCC scholars.
In 2018, the Danville group of Alliance for Excellence visited the Center for Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation at Duke University. This began a long affiliation of working with young people in the community to build bridges and repair a history of racism in the region.
Community members in Danville and the surrounding area started meeting monthly to discuss the “new narrative on race” and a youth movement is in the works as of August 2020.
The Alliance for Excellence at Patrick Henry Community College engages students of all ages through partnerships and service.
The longstanding partnership with the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) has afforded community youths exposure to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) opportunities. These opportunities range from conducting research on disease prevalent in Henry County to building robots.
"The best education I received was working with people in the community on a grassroots basis. Because what it taught me was that ordinary people, when they are working together can do extraordinary things."
Barack Obama
Extraordinary things are happening throughout the Roanoke Valley as the Alliance for Excellence works with three Virtual Learning Academy organizations that provide safe spaces for Roanoke City Public School students to learn.
In addition to providing school supplies to these sites, the Alliance and its community partners have joined forces with Scoony’s Seafood to provide lunches to these students.
This has been particularly significant as we understand the role that health and nutrition play in the ability to learn. Food insecurity is a reality for so many students throughout the Valley. Providing lunches that are both tasty and healthy go a long way in meeting their basic needs.
